[p]The eSports scene is turning out to be huge in 2010. So far this year we have seen the Alienware clan challenge, MSI's CyberGamer Counter-Strike: Source Championship, and a plethora of locally organised LAN events across Australia.
Roughly, as a total shot in the dark, this amounts to well over $100,000 in prizes been offered to competitors, and if you follow Sydney Gamers League's motto then bystanders as well.

To give you an idea of what is coming up, in Sydney alone, for the rest of this year:

Tomorrow Sydney Gamers League is offering up to $20,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, for people of all skill levels in games like Counter-Strike: Source, Heroes of Newerth, Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and many more!

Prizes sound great, but it's cold outside and you'd rather stay at home, right? Well maybe this will make you think it is really worth while for you to lug your PC all the way to a LAN event.

Thanks to ASUS and NVIDIA, Sydney Gamers League (SGL) will be the first public showing of the state of the art, 3D Vision Surround Beta in the world! This new technology develops on the previous NVIDIA Surround and 3-Dimensional technology to provide "3D gaming across three 1080p displays for a breathtaking experience". Combined with the imminent release of the ASUS 1080p 120Hz VG236H - 3D Vision Ready, with an RRP of $999, and you can earn one by competing in the ASUS Need for Speed 3D Vision Surround Beta competition.

Coupled with this, ASUS is showing off its latest and greatest graphics card, the ASUS Ares, and with a price tag of $1999, this card packs a mighty punch! This beast is the sequel to the popular ASUS Mars, and is so powerful, only 1 000 were made, and you can be one of the first Australian's to see its force at SGL!

You can see these technologies at "SGL the Third" this weekend (3rd/4th July) at Macquarie University and register for the event [a href=";http://www.sgl.org.au"]here[/a]. Entry is $40, and tickets will be available at the door.

Also starting from September 1st, Thermaltake and Tte Sports in conjunction with Anyware Computer Accessories and netGameRadio, are hosting a 16-week long Counter-Strike: Source tournament at City Hunter Internet Café in Sydney.
With a total prize pool of $14,500 available at no entry fee for any teams, this is set to be one of the biggest locally organised Counter-Strike: Source events for the year.

Each week teams will be able to win a share of $500 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. At the end of the 16-week period, qualifying teams will be able to play for a final prize of $6,500 with $5,000 going to 1st place. More details can be found [a href=";http://www.netgameradio.com/news/gamingnews/thermaltake-esports-counter-strike-source-14500-competition"]here[/a]

Interested in taking your eSports to the next level? then I encourage you to step outside and head over to a LAN event, you can socialise with fellow gamers, participate in events and competitions, and show off your skills.
I hope everyone who participates in these events enjoys themself! [/p]

Well thats great for Sydney people. In addition, Melbourne host Respawn at the same time which is a larger event with less prizes and in Perth, Redflag LANfest (rflan) hosts a sellout 360 person event this weekend as well. In Brisbane, LANsmash is also on and caters for 200 people. Finally, Adelaide next weekend has the ASUS Reloaded 2010 event which is bigger than all of them. Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide events are also sponsored by Tt eSports. ASUS will also be running a demo section at Reloaded.

As far as major LANs go, this is one of the busiest periods of the year, Australia wide.

SGL was organised pathetically heard you cant get on the nternet except for Steam and that teams got shafted out of finals by playing extra games, when a team that played 3 games got thru when they lost 2 games and won 1. Needs to be a lot more organised.

Casua1ty says:8:53pm 4/7/10:

Hey mate

Did you actually attend? "Heard you cant get ..." and as for the finals, as far as I am aware, that did not happen? and as for the "lost 2 games and won 1" - that definately did not happen as all our comps are double elimination or single elimination...

demz what are you on about mate?... casuality is right...
you can get internet if you really need it, but its fairly common place to not get internet.
and whos this team that lost twice and won once? thats unpossible!
apart from going an hour or two later than expected, it was fairly well organised this time
