archMSI Motion Response to Red Orchestra 2
Evening motion how about you tell us a little about yourself and who are you in relation to esports?
Hi. Well i'm 21 years old, currently studying Commerce/Digital Communication and fragging in my spare time. In relation to eSports i currently play Call of Duty 4 competitively with ArchaicMSI and had played with multiple top CoD teams prior to that. I've been gaming since i was about 12 starting with Ghost Recon and then eventually progressed into Call of Duty and 1.6
What are you initial impression of Red Orchestra 2?
I was pretty excited about RO2 release and still am. I was a big fan of Ostfront and had played the game when it was a UT2k4 mod so i had a great appreciation for how far the developers had come. Besides that, the fact that TripWire had put in so much effort to please the community really made me feel that RO2 could be something great.
I'm really happy with the beta and have had fun pubbing with the rest of the Archaic guys. As a whole most of us are quite happy with the game though there are definitely some daunting aspects when you first start out. It took a while to adjust to the slower styled movement/gameplay that RO2 uses but after a while it feels fine. The gameplay as a whole is quite good imo. I do feel some of the weapons are quite overpowered, the MP40 was ridiculously overpowered but i've heard they're nerfing that. The other major weapon imbalance i believe is the auto rifles. It's just way too easy to multifrag with the auto rifles. Hopefully the full version is balanced. I don't really feel there is too many major issues with the game right now.
Visually the game looks fantastic. Though to be honest i quickly swapped out the ultra settings for the lowest so i could not be distracted by all the eye candy. I get really good performance either way, usually sitting at ~80-100fps on a pretty average PC.
I think the game definitely has some competitive potential. Both Territory and Countdown could be used for competition. I'd probably lean towards Countdown right now as it doesn't seem that there is enough interest in the competitive side of RO2 as of yet. Countdown would allow us to use a smaller format(6v6 even) but i'd probably much prefer to play 8v8 territory. I think another reason the game has some serious competitive potential is due to the learning curve. The weapons have quite a steep learning curve, hitting 100m rifle shots consistently will take some time as well as mastering the recoil patterns.
Does tripwire have your confidence when it comes to the future of this game?
We've been burned multiple times by recent fps games so i wouldn't say i'm 100% confident in TripWire. That said TripWire has been great so far, all of the beta patches have been a massive improvement over their predecessors so i'd say i do have some confidence in them supporting the game.
When competition comes into effect what would you want to see removed/added to make the game more competitive freindly?
Weapon restrictions i think will be a major part of RO2's competitive side. As i stated earlier, the semi auto's are overpowered so i'd either remove them completely or have 1 per side. I'd probably like to see something like this occur in regards to weapons.
Unlimited rifles
2 smg
1 sniper
1 mg
1 auto rifle
I think for RO2 to distinguish itself as a competitive game it needs to be unique. I've seen people wanting to remove the mg's and such but i think giving teams more freedom to run whichever setup they choose will be for the better in the end. I can tell you now you'd probably see Archaic running around with a team full of rifles.
I can't really give too much insight into anything else that the game needs right now. Once we get our hands on the full version i'm sure we'll be able to workout what's missing.
Do you think CyberGamer CoD enthusiats will be attracted to this game?
It's a very different game. Much slower pace, completely unforgiving and just all around more challenging. With that said i think people that enjoyed CoD1/2 and World at War might enjoy the game due to the rifle action.
I think people should be attracted to RO2 for the simple reason that it is currently ticking all the boxes for what you want out of a PC game.
Will ArchaicMSI a "successful Call Of Duty 4 team" make a permanent change to Red Orchestra 2?
Well we wont be giving up CoD to play RO2, but in the event the game has a competitive following i'm sure we'll be there gunning for that #1 spot!
To rap it up do you have any shoutouts you would like to put to paper?
yourself, archaicMSI,gameplex
Thanks for interview Marsha!
Thank you to motion for partaking in my interview i hope this gives a little insight into the game for people not yet sold on the quality of this First Person Shooter. Hopefully i can produce more quality content throughout the development of this game figuratively and competitively.
Thanks for reading,
Marsha
