Yeah but your comment was idiocy, making you an idiot.

Nice post - shame it doesn't subtract from the fact you think speedlink medusas are good headphones. Which is exactly why I called you an idiot.

Fair game I reckon.

Good at directional sound - which is important to gamers and in movies. If you can't understand that then you are the idiot

Indeed Raze, indeed.

I'm just amazed how you think that using Medusas with an onboard soundcard would sound better than Audio Technica ATH-A900s with a Asus Xonar Essence STX while watching movies.

Like you even need positional sound while watching a movie anyway.

Protip: Get speakers if you want positional sound with movies, for crying out loud.

I don't? And never said such a thing!

What I am trying to say is that, all things equal (ie. soundcard, etc), and with only a change of headphones, my Medusa 5.1's (believe it or not, I'm not really fussed) offered better directional sound then my 555's.

Now don't misunderstand what my above comment means - I am not saying the sound quality is better, as there is no way the cheap ass speakers used in the Medusa's come close to sounding as great as those used in my 555's - I'm simply stating the directional sound is better. ie. depth and location of a sound is better.

Now take from that what you will, but in games, directional sound is more important then improved sound quality. Much like with your video card settings, higher fps with medium quality settings is more beneficial then low fps and bling high quality settings.

I'm sure most would be happy to forego a some of the quality to better determine exactly where the enemy is.

All I can say in response to this comment is wow!

I thought you just said you don't need positional sound for movies

And as for speakers instead, most can not use speakers and have to use headphones.

A bit hypocritical, yes I would agree.

I still don't think you get what I'm trying to say.
A900s with STX would beat Medusas with STX in positional sound AND sound quality anyday.

I was specifically comparing the 555's and the Medusa's as they are what I own.

I have read that the A900's have awesome soundstage, and suspect that with the right processing from a quality soundcard that they might provide better directional sound in games - but I can not say that with any certainty as I don't own them

I can only compare what I have

Edit: I'll try and make it to the next lan in my area and see if anyone there has some A900's and then compare them to my 555's and Medusa's.

Or any Audio Technicas for that matter (AD700, A700, A900, AD900)

Not sure about 500s and 300s.

I have read that the HD555's are comparable in sound quality to the A700's. So I could say that since I feel the Medusa's are better at directional sound compared to the 555's, then they would also be better at directional sound then 700's.

However I also read the AD700's have greater soundstage compared to the HD555's, which would suggest they are as good, if not better then the Medusa's at directional sound (with the right processing from a quality soundcard).

But I can't compare what I don't own so I'll leave it at that

www.google.com

Search. What is soundstage.

First link,

Reader Question: What is Soundstage in a Stereo System?

Soundstage is a term used to describe an element of the stereo listening experience. It is also called soundstaging. A good soundstage describes the ability of the music system to reproduce the acoustic information about the shape, size, space and acoustic characteristics of the venue in which the recording was made. A good soundstage can place the location of the performers or instruments in front of the listener and often extends beyond the boundaries of the speakers in the music system. Soundstaging is often enhanced by the correct placement of speakers in the listening room

In reference to speakers/headphones it is the acoustic representation of the locations on the stage (or in the studio mix) where the audio/sound is recorded (placed in the mix).

eg. If you were to record a band, with a drum in the centre, a bass on the left and a guitar on the right, the better the soundstage performance by the speakers/headphones, the better the ability to accurately hear the location of the drums in the centre, the bass on the left and the guitar on the right.
