cashmoney would have to be the best incentive... hardware prizes can be fair annoying unless you actually need/want it - maybe offer 2 prizes and get the player/team to choose?
lan autoberth is up there... major problem with getting teams to lan is the cost of flights/accommodation - a compromise between a full cash prize and lan flights paid would be hard to say no to as you get a reward straight away then a reward a little later. that's why the msi comp is successful.
at the end of the day you need to make it easy for the teams and players to play the game... registration costs (including flights/accom), scheduling and different kind of restraints etc just restrict people~ i think that's more of an important factor than prizes or rewards... if you helped better teams/players get to lan i think the top 2/3 teams would appreciate that more than getting more cash$$money
participation/keenness is fairly arbitrary, especially online... people play because they want to, not because of possibly winning prizes - working for money is much easier.
not entirely related and a little ******ed: it's somewhat deflating going to a well-attended lan/comp and having 1 or 2 super teams (im/sql/arc) dominate everyone else time after time... which i guess is why gotgames have done the am/intvite ODC split... it would be good if there was some kind of main/inter lan (not so much an amateur lan, no one would care about that) without the top pro teams - the same thing would kind of happen but it would be a little different to seeing im/sql/arc winning and go a long way to improve teams and/or players... not allowing teams into a comp would be a hard call and it's hard to say what a lan would be worth of the best of the best weren't there...
glhf~ anything like this is only a step forward (into where ever css/gaming is going...)
