Thats right! It is finally here, the three new custom maps are ready to go. After a just a little over a year of rotating between No Mercy, Dead Air, Blood Harvest and even Death Toll of late, the L4D team are kicking a bit of spice back in to the L4D ladder with three custom maps: City 17, Suicide Blitz & Death Aboard. However, that is not all. Someone from Bogl must have some burning ears, as we are bringing in the Rotoblin mod. For those unsure of the mod, it is an infected dream. No auto shotgun or assault rifle what so ever. No med packs at all. Bring on the low scoring matches! Here is a little run down of the maps.
City 17:
Fans of the Half Life series will quickly feel some nostalgia in this L4D campaign.
Gordan The survivors must pass through the burning city whilst fighting of all the infected. The first map is a small tight tunnel leading to the carpark. Lots of cars for a 20-60% tank to hit, with multiple area's to launch a quad from. The second maps will survivors pass through a multi-story car park crescendo before heading to a daunting NM3 like ladder and then off to a very familiar elevator crescendo area (yes, 2 in one map!) that still gives me nightmares of little spiders everywhere. Map 3 is where the hunter fun begins - a huge selection of huge rooftops to pounce from, many 25's will ensue. Map 4 is where the impossible comes in. Any team that makes it across both aerial bridges needs some sort of achievement on their own. Map 5 will see the survivors attempt to get out of the city on a train. Good luck!
Suicide Blitz:
A No Mercy esque start to the map will have fans of that map loving the elevator and apartment area. Once out of the apartment though, it is a big open city, with many high roofs for hunters to get their damage on. There are also some nice pull back spots that smokers could potentially shine in. Maps 2 and 3 both have a mixture of outside and underground area's, all of which are going to prove deadly - none other than another NM3 styled ladder. The end of map 4 is going to be a very sacrificial one for the survivors, my bet is that at least someone HAS to die. The finale sees the survivors in a football stadium, awaiting a helicopter rescue. The start of the finale though, it is possible to get a 100 damage pounce with the cap off. Huge area.
Death Aboard:
Arguably the most popular custom map of L4D, this well made and polished map is a real test of the survivors skill. A mostly indoor map 1 is not as much of a cakewalk as you would think, with possible insta kills and also a crescendo, it can be deadly. Map 2 sees again a great canvas for hunters to show off. Map 3 is an extremely long one, with a crescendo near the end of the map is going to really test the finesse of teams. Map 4 is well known for being the sinking ship, which is on quite the tilt. Map 5 is where the fun will really begin, walking up a cliff face to a light house, and then back down to catch a hot air balloon.
The map pack can be found
right here on CyberGamer for fast download. As a warning though, L4D custom campaigns are not small. Compressed, this file is 611mb, so it may be an idea to leave it just before your cap runs out, or to download it during an off peak time. The maps can be individually downloaded from
this website however Australian users have seen quite slow speeds from that site.
As a side note, there is a small issue with Death Aboard and Rotoblin not fully functioning. I have got a plan in place to fix it, however it may take a few days for it to be implemented. As such, it will not be available to be offered just yet. The ladder will re-opened tonight and teams will have their stats reset due to new season starting.
Be quick to get your challenges in, and if you have dropped from the L4D scene due to boredom, now is the time to get back amongst it. I plan to be checking out some more custom maps to see if any are suitable, and who knows, we may even start to see some popping up in the L4D2 ladder soon
