Some and news.

First the good news!

SDM will ship with AA 3.0
Fluff:
SQUAD DESIGNATED MARKSMAN
The SDM or Squad Designated Marksman supports the squad by laying down accurate rapid fire at distances beyond the normal engagement range of the squad's rifleman. The average rifleman is trained to engage targets no more than 300 meters. A sniper engages targets beyond 600m while the SDM is trained to engage targets in "No Man's Land," the area between the capabilities of the two. Although the SDM receives much of the same training, he is not a sniper. The SDM is a rifleman and deploys as a member of a squad. He maneuvers and engages with his squad and never operates alone. To qualify to become a squad designated marksman, you must score at least 36 or higher during Basic Rifle Marksmanship.

M16A4 DMR

The M16A4 DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) is a more accurate version of the M16A4 that is issued to a squad's designated marksman. Fitted with a heavy 20-inch barrel this weapon is designed to accurately engage the enemy beyond the maximum range of the other squad members' weapons systems. Typically fitted with the Trijicon ACOG M150 4x optic, the M16A4 DMR is equipped with a 2-stage match trigger and can only be fired in the semi-automatic firemode.

Now the bad news:

America's Army 2.8.5 Patch
America's Army: Special Forces (Overmatch) v2.8.5
Posted: 24 APR 2009 - by Phoenix
We are proud to present another America's Army release. This release includes ES2 updates to four classic maps: SF Courtyard, SF Hospital, Urban Assault and Bridge Crossing. The maps have been updated with additional ES2 objects to discover and report. ES2 Bridge is an updated version of the popular Bridge Crossing map with new gameplay elements added such as ES2 objects with enhanced intelligence functionality. Players will be able to unlock access to a new path under the bridge and supply intelligence on enemy positions. We've also added improvements to the civilian AI within ES2 Border to have the AI react in a more realistic manner. Lock and load, it's time to go to work!

Extended bad news:
http://americasarmy.com/intel/sitrep.php

The only good fix announced:

- Fixed issue with the camera sinking through the ground while ragdolling in first-person. It was caused by a counter not being incremented unless the ragdoll was being rendered. Bumped the eye position up a few units when the player is dead just to ensure the camera doesn't even partially look through the ground.

This will mean our fraps \ highlight reels will look a smidgen better

Why they continue with the M16 when it's supposed to be all about realism and there's barely an m16 in existince over in Iraq... is beyond me.

I can only hope the SDM gets a pistol as good as the current m9!

Yuk yuk yuk. Who the hell gives 2 shits about ES2. Every time i log on and see 10 ppl in ES2 border and the like that could be populating a decent map drives me nuts. Should have booted it from the game instead of making it "better"
But the ragdolling thing is one plus i guess.
Whens it due?

To be fair that gun model does look good... they should have left the update with that and forgotten a patch

Seeings as they're doing a patch they should fix the server version so we can lock servers without having to restart:

You couldn't be more wrong.

The M16 is still an active service rifle and it's being used in Iraq, it's not all M4's you know.
