Continued on from the thread that had to be locked due to idiots.

I personally am disgusted by Kewell's red card, and the last 10 minutes with only 2 players is absolutely insane.

Now if we can just beat serbia by about 5-0, and Germany smash Ghana we have a very tiny chance haha.

If we beat Serbia by only 1 goal, germany have to beat ghana by at least 4 for us to jump ahead of them. If ghana somehow beat germany and we beat serbia we'd go through ahead of germany.

Kewell's red card was a joke. A couple of tackles worse than Cahill's were only given cautions? Ridiculous.

I have no doubt that we would of won if Kewell had of only received a yellow. Pathetic display of refereeing, not so much the red, but that tackle was a clear red card if they're going to be consistent for the whole tournament.

Agreed Krit,

I was so worked up about Cahills card, But this one is just an absolute joke. I hope the referee gets slammed by fifa for it..

AND TO TOP IT OFF HERE'S WHY THE REALITY WAS THAT IT WAS NOT A PENALTY... In FIFA's Laws of the Game (2005), Law 12 states that a free kick or penalty will be awarded if a player "handles the ball DELIBERATELY (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)". Here's why it was not even a yellow card, let alone a red... It adds: "Referees are reminded that deliberately handling the ball is normally punished only by a direct free-kick or penalty kick if the offence occurred inside the penalty area. FIFA continues "A caution or dismissal is not normally required"

i dont see any adjustments from 2005 to 2010?

Sigh... Short end of the stick vs Italy Last world Cup
Short end of the stick vs Referees this World Cup.

Still though, 10 of us were able to hold Ghana off for the rest of the game, and come CLOSE TWICE to scoring a winner...

most recent edition is 2008/9 im pretty sure, and it's only a red card if a player deliberately handles the ball to prevent a goal/obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Almost funny that this ref was Italian.

Ok, since probably no one knows why Kewell was sent, I can explain. I am actually a ref.

The ref must send off a player who denies and obvious goal scoring opportunity by a handball. As written in the FIFA law book. That call was 100% needed as he denied the goal by a handball.

The only thing debatable was whether or not that was actually a handball. In my opinion, no. But the ref called it, and the punishment for that is red.

You're half right. It's only a red card if the hand ball is deliberate
Quote from FIFA Laws of the Game 2010/11:
A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the
following seven offences:
denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within
his own penalty area)

Kewell was red carded because the referee must have thought it was a deliberate handball. Not sure how it is deliberate when your eyes are shut.

Seeing as how you don't think it was deliberate, it can't be a red.
