Hey guys,

I am having a problem with my overclock and was wondering if anyone could help me.

I recently upgraded my i7 920 to and i7 930 because i had a store credit at msy. I am using the same settings for my 930 as i was for my 920, but it won't pass the prime95 stress test.

Specs: P6X58D - Premium mobo
- i7 930 processor
- 6gb of DDR3 Kingston Hyperx 1600 mhz Ram

I think that my voltage may not be high enough but i'm unsure how high i should raise my voltage.

If anyone knows a good guide for me to overclock please let me know. Also unsure of how high i should overclock and how much it could reduce the life of my cpu.

As a rule of thumb, never upgrade a 920 D0 good batch to a 930.
The good, lateish 920s overclock far better than the 930s.

Also, the i7 CPU's don't like the 22x multi that is stock on a 930, so drop it back to 21x.
What is your vid?
The voltage limit for the chips for 24/7 use is about 1.45-1.48 volts. At the higher range you will be getting abit of electron migration.
The 930s seem to need more voltage than the 920s to reach the same speeds, but they should still hit 4ghz without too much of a problem.

What batch/stepping was your 920? if it is a good batch D0, see if you can return the 930 for it. Alot of 920 D0's hit 4ghz on about 1.25v on water.

What cooling have you got? What are you max temps? HT on?

My i7 was D0 batch and its to late for a refund cause i gave it away to scantraxx.

HT is on, i have a corsair H50 liquid cooler with to noctua fans in a push/pull setup.

Stock temps @ idle are 36, 36, 35,36.

So drop back the multiplier to 21x and what kind of volts should i start with?

I new you would reply to this lantern. Haha

D0 is the stepping, not the batch
but still, giving away the best i7 non EE model out.....

Cooling is okay, might not get you to 4ghz though unless you crank the AC lol
Idle temps don't matter at all. What are your stock MAX LOAD temps?

I cant recommend a good voltage until I know the VID.
Also, remember that this isnt like Ocing a c2d. Gotta remember the cpu pll, the uncore, etc.

Remeber overclocking is different with EVERY chip and EVERY board. I could have same cooling, board, chip, batch everything and be able to get 4.4ghz stable, when yours wont boot over 3.5.

and of course im gonna reply, at least this is more interesting that some mw2 LFC threads.

and beaver, gimme me a ******* raise

With lantern's help, I now have my i7 930 @ 3.8ghz with a vcore of 1.14.
Ran prime95 all night and not 1 error. Max temps of 67.
