u could get something decent for 2k easy.

24" BenQ's for around $300
Keyboard + mouse around $200

leaves u $1500 with which u can get a fairly good comp

Dont get ur comp from a store retailer either, go to a warehouse company, they will give u a way better price.

As for a rig, Hardy is right, i7 is a bit out of reach to get a decent GFX card + Monitor etc

Mobo- Any P45 mobo
CPU - Q9550
CPU Cooler - Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
RAM - Corsair 2 x 2Gb
GFX - Radeon 4870
Sound - ur call if u feel u need it
HDD - again ur call, my personal choice is the seagate 500Gb 7200.11
Case - again personal choice
Power - Corsair 650TX
DVD - Samsung DVDR/W
Monitor - Depends what size u want

Ya, it's possible to get it all in under 2k, but you'll have to cut a few corners (i.e sound card would be out of the question).

P45 would be the way to go imo. For intel anyway.

BenQ and others have released 22" monitors that will do full HD resolutions, not sure about the other models but the BenQ's have been going for well under $300 - bought my parents one and it goes fine.

4GB ram can be had for ~$100, still much cheaper than ddr3

I'd also look at 3rd party cpu coolers to be safe, but this does add to the total price.
