Hey guys, about 2 days ago I launched COD4 multiplayer only to find it crashed to desktop after the splash screen with no error.
After hours of googling, every single person with this problem said either:
A. enable stereo mix in sound or
B. Plugging a microphone into the microphone jack
would fix the problem.

Stereo mix was disabled, so I enabled it but the game would still crash. I have even reinstalled the drivers but still no luck.
I have tried plugging in a microphone into the microphone jack but to no avail. Also tried USB microphones.

I tried reinstalling the game, my display drivers, all my sound devices but nothing seems to working. Every other person with the problem it is fixed by stereo mix. And also of course I have tried restarting my PC, many times. Also tried moving all my mods / configs out of the cod4 folder before reinstalling in case they were corrupt.

Yes I am running the game as adminstrator, I have tried various compatibility modes and I have played the game for years with no problems. Singleplayer and all other games work fine...

I'm out of ideas and can't get any results, does anyone know how to fix this!? [sm-bawl]

Specs (If you need any more info just ask):
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
3 gig ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

Cheers in advance

Scodelario I believe so, not 100% sure and system information won't tell me

Tried installing Mobo drivers but once again to no avail, but I think I solved it, my microphone doesn't seem to be working, perhaps it's the right solution I just need a working microphone.

Next time I'm out I'll buy a new microphone and give that a go, cheers for the help guys

I may aswell ask, does anyone know if you can trick cod4 into thinking a microphone is plugged into the jack?

I got it working!
I reinstalled again onto my second drive and it's suddenly working!?

I don't have a clue what the problem was, since I cleared the drive after reinstalling so it can't of been something corrupt?

Thanks for all the input guys, appreciated! Game on!
