pretty much the best advise a pro can give people who have no idea, but i dont think its as easy as some pros put it, getting in a to a scene regardless of how good you are can be tough, hence why a lot of people tend to specialise in just one particular game.
also, you really have to blow people out of the water in a small community like australia to make it to a top 5 tier team, due to everyone knowing each other and being close friends.
i guess the best advise is, if you really enjoy it, regardless of where you are now and you want to be the best in australia one day, you have to sacrifice and dedicate your brain/body to it and it won't happen overnight, sometimes it takes a year to understand everything, then you need a team, a lot of it can come down to luck/circumstance.
for example, i could have played internationally for cod, for cs 1.6 and for css, but due to life/random events, they've all been cancelled/rejected/missed. one thing i have to say is, think about what you could look back on in a few years, if you get a chance that will be memorable, take it, don't reject it due to loyalty or achieving minor goals in the short term
also it's easy to leave room for work or personal lives/girlfriends contrary to what some people think
