Thought I'd post a follow up to my new pc thread posted a while back.
I ended up budgeting myself to only $1000, because I'm stingy, but still came up with a reasonable result.
Before you laugh at the build, I wanted to go with AMD for something new, and paid the extra cash for a 6core cpu in the hope that in the near future software will take advantage of it.
Build in the end was:
OCZ 4G (2x2G) DDR3 1333 PC10666 Gold Edition LV (OCZ3G1333LV4GK) $86.00
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 SATA II 7200RPM 32M $58.00
Antec ATX TruePower 750W $146.00
LG H22NS50 SATA 22X+- Super Multi DVDR Black with Software $26.00
Gigabyte GA-790XT-USB3 AM3 AMD790X 4DDR3 2PCIE2.0 $126.00
Thermaltake V5 LanParty Black Edition w Reinforced Handle NO PSU $79.00
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T(3.2GHz)AM3 9MBCache125W $266.00
Sapphire HD6850 1G GDDR5 PCIE HDMI DP $230.00
Total: $1017
Ram was originally Kingston, but they were out of stock and offered me this instead.
Building my first PC was a stressful task, not knowing whether anything I was doing was correct, or killing the hardware, but in the end it proved somewhat successful. I was grounding myself by touching the case ( couldn't find any anti-static bracelets / mats in the area) and was using the manuals as a guide to build the system.
First go at pressing the power button led to a restart cycle on the motherboard logo, and after panicking for 30min trying to figure out why, I took it all apart, tried again ( this time plugging in my POST speaker :p) and same thing happened. I shat myself the whole night hoping I didn't blow it and came to the conclusion ( after a shit load of googling) that my motherboard was just faulty. I took it in to a local PC shop to get it tested (to make warranty returning easier lol) but it turns out my bios needed to be updated to support the CPU ( which is one thing I overlooked as the motherboard manual said it was supported).
The PC is now up and running, and i can happily say it's the first time I'm playing an FPS game with more then 50fps on low settings
Not sure how it compares to other builds, but here is an Unigine 2.1 Benchmark, hopefully it proves well.
I plan on crossfiring a second 6850, and upgrading the monitor to one which supports higher resolutions and High Def.
/end super excited nerd rant.
