Hey guys recently my team and another team tried to have a scrim. I decided to book a server using GameArena's server booking system, and created a password so no randoms could join.

However no one could connect to the server. No matter what commands we used in the console it wouldnt work. Typing connect IP into the console brought us to a screen asking for a password, and entering the password did nothing.

Any ideas why this happened?

There is a major problem with L4D2 servers and passwords.

Firstly, there is no way to password an L4D2 server outside of using the competitive mod, confogl and then setting the confogl_password.

Had you just tried to connect to the server without the password, you would have gotten in(to do so after trying to connect with a password you must type password "" or sv_password "" )

If you're talking about L4D1, which it sounds like you are, then perhaps you misspelt the password when entering it into the GA GameCreate page? Try setting up another with a simple password like 101 or something.

As far as GameArena & their passwords, I can't be sure what else to tell you. Give me some more information, eg which game and I'll be able to offer more help.

but it sounds like you're talking about l4d1 and i don't know of anyone who has any server for that still so looks like you'll have to stay with gay marina, bl man.

do what meshu said with the simple password if that doesn't work complain about gamearena till you get bored and play on a pub server

Haha actually i was talking about L4d2, hence the reason why i posted in the L4d2 forums, not the L4d1 forums.

And i did try connecting without the password, yet it kept taking me to a password screen where nothing would happen no matter what password i entered.

Now that i know passworded servers and L4D2 dont work without the mod, i guess ill have to find my own server, as im pretty sure GameArena dont support mods in their booking system.

I'm quite sure they don't. By connecting without the password did you actually clear the saved password in the console or did you just connect with the connect string, but no password on the end?

If you're looking to get into scrimming other teams there are some steam groups you could join(L4D2 scrim network etc). Otherwise you can always just add me on steam and I can see what I can do about organizing a server for you to scrim on.

lol i've never seen that popup thing in l4d2, because it doesn't support passworded servers i just assumed it didn't exist in this game

Sometime if a (Valve) password is set you will still get the old style L4D1 password prompt in-game, however, having passwords is not supported and will cause the server to crash, hence why you couldn't join. The only way to password your servers is with Confogl.

Hmm ok, yeh it might have been the L4D1 password screen haha.

And no Meshu i didnt do that. But the first time i ever tried connecting i tried without the password(eg just the ip) and it didnt work, so i thought id try the password after that and nothing changed.
