It hasn't hit store shelves yet, but Dead Space 2 held a launch event in Sydney last Friday. The embargo for reviews has expired pretty much all over the world since then, with reviews popping up here, there and everywhere praising what some are describing one of the best survival horror games of the genre.
Greg Miller from IGN, however,
went a little overboard in his praise.
Quote:
Dead Space 2 is an amazing game. I'm going to write about its scary moments, cool kills, and how much I dig the main character's internal struggle, but Dead Space 2 is about more than this.
Let's be clear about this: Greg Miller is a paid professional journalist. He's been employed at IGN since 2006; he didn't join yesterday, an impression you may find hard to shake after you read the following quotes from his
ejaculation glowing review.
Quote:
This is where you come in. As Isaac, you'll pick up your plasma cutter, don an engineering suit and take the fight to the beasts out to kill you.
Apparently game pundits (the term journalist feels tenuous all of a sudden) get excited about appearing as a box quote, something Miller seems anxious to achieve.
Quote:
Each of these weapons -- along with your suit, telekinesis and stasis module -- can be upgraded for maximum ass-kicking...
Naturally, the internet went viral, questioning if Miller's two-page drivel was actually written by a kid in middle school (high-school for us).
Ben Paddon, founder of the website game writers love to hate, Game Journalists are Incompetent ****wits, was a little more direct in his appraisal:
Quote from Ben Paddon:
Presumably at some point after you finished writing it, you sat down and re-read it. You were okay with the review in this form. At no point did it occur to you that at some point someone would read the review and think, "Hang on, did an adult write this? Because if so... damn." This, I think, is part of the problem.
Paddon's response, however, came after an even more hilarious twist in the saga. Miller published a blog on IGN this morning, challenging his critics, insulting the existence of Reddit (how Miller doesn't know Reddit exists while working at IGN, a company filled with employees who Miller admits are fans of the website, astounds me)
and displaying a pretty disturbing lack of self-awareness.
Quote from Greg Miller:
No, I'm not irritated that people are sourpusses about my review or that they don't like me; I'm upset because no one is telling me why my review sucks.
Ask and ye shall receive, Greg. Let this be a lesson to all of you: if you wish to challenge reddit, Facebook, 4chan, hell even the dwindling MySpace, do not do so lightly.
Miller most certainly won't, especially after a reply on reddit, which pretty much ends the argument.
As a side note, IGN put out a call last week for new freelancers to join the herd. I e-mailed my application; I haven't received a reply yet, and don't expect to, but this little episode makes me feel a hell of a lot better.
