I'm not aware of iRC being successful in any Aus game community. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Yeah hasn't worked in years to my knowledge. Back when CSS was flying along and CoD was coming of age it worked great.

People CBF with it these days, seems to be too hard...

Steam groups are still the best idea. Don't know why you wouldn't of knew that Rag.

No one will ever use IRC even in a little community like this one.

Quake 1, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Quake 3, CS:Source, CoD, UT and Natural Selection to name just a few.

People still use it. irc.gamesurge.net or org or whatever i can't remember i dont have mirc open right now. Actually the pug channels for CS have quite a lot of activity surprisingly =/. eg ipgn comp.

We even used IRC for L4D...people just fail at it/alt tabbing is frustrating so they don't bother with it when it's just as effective to open steam chat to ask one of the few other online clans for a scrim. That and L4D discourages a competitive community. It's all about the co-op.

Steam has group chatrooms, since everyone's in the CG L4D group, why not just jump in when you're on?

Members should be able to make announcements on that group as well.
