Who here has a Telstra Cable connection for the home ?

There current prices are listed below
www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/cable/plans-and-offers/

i dont care what there prices are just there quality of data im concerned about

My question is has anyone got cable and are happy with it and why?
Any problems that i should be aware of?
For gaming have you noticed a improvement when connected to cable?
General Downloads are generally faster with cable?
How is Telstras Customers Support in general?

and so forth you get the idea any info would be appreciated

Thanks

pretty sure the only benifit of cable is download speed, up to 30mbps with telstra, ive never tried it as i dont have a cable here, but i been told it's not as stable as ADSL, gets a bit congested at peak times and can lag and drop out, so i would guess it's probably not as good for gaming as ADSL.

Where is ur location would also help.

Im in brisbane went from cable (at a house ) to adsl2(now in a unit) and my ping went from 35-40 to 65-70.This is north side brisbane.

The move was like 1 km from the old place to new.I also had a good plan and now on the same one and dont notice a difference in dl rate.

One thing i did notice going from cable to adsl2 is that i couldnt dl torrents and play cod on cable(900+ ping whilst dling)but on adsl2 no problem to dl torrents and play cod pings dont change a bit.

Gl with ur search.

Tbh the only reason I'm on cable is because if I had ADSL1/2 my speed would be heaps slower. Download at 1mbs which isnt that quick nowadays but considering I'm downloading at that speed over a wireless router and im too far away from the local box to make DSL worth having. Have never experienced 'slowdowns' during congested times. Only slowdowns I get is when sister or brother decide its upload time. Only complaint is poor upload speeds.

I've got optus cable and i always get low 20s ping on Sydney servers. Although playing while downloading slows it down and also if you want to play while capped you have to reduce max packets or you'll lag hardcore.

Download speed is awesome, 13mbps.

The speeds are perfectly fine, the pings are great, and I've never had trouble with congestion.

The big problem, though, is the crappy plans. I know you've said you don't care about prices, but $90 for 25GB (my current plan) is an absolute ******* rip off. With Internode or Optus (or basically any other provider) you could get close to double that for the same price. Telstra Bigpond is pretty much the only provider left that hasn't moved to an on-peak / off-peak system, and that still charges you for uploads.

If you aren't a heavy downloader, Telstra cable is fine. If you are, go with someone else.

And if you do go with Telstra, MAKE SURE you do not go on one of their plans that charges you for additional usage. They charge 15c per megabyte over your usage limit - you can easily rack up excess usage fees of $250-$1000. Make sure you pick a plan that caps you once you reach your limit (although, playing any game + being on vent while capped on cable is virtually impossible, even if you're on their "extreme" plan, which supposedly gives you a higher capped speed).

Telstra has outstanding quality, never any dropouts, lag or peak congestion. Only problem is their shit plans @ ripoff prices.

Slaydawg the reason your ping jumped when changing from cable -> ADSL2 is called interleaving. Some companies allow you to disable this (iinet, internode). It results in a slower down/upload capacity, but will most likely reduce our ping back to what it was on cable.

Stay 100% away from optus. I'm with them atm (cause of parents zzz) and they charge for uploads and have shitty data allowance deals.

My suggestion: ADSL2+ from iinet, internode, exetel. They allow you to top off at the end of the month, on/off peak times and allow you to disable interleaving if you wish.

Im currently with Internode Adsl2 which i must admit is pretty good and the prices are okay but not the best compared to Tpg.

i dont need a lan line no more as my mobile is used for all my calls.

So i was thinking either staying with Internode:
www.internode.on.net/residential/broadband/adsl/extreme/pricing/

Or Signing up with Tpg:
www.tpg.com.au/products_services/ull_pricing.php

Thus eliminating my lan line

Or i could go for good old telstra Cable

Decisions Decisions !
