Quote from Kotaku:
Multiplayer, action role-playing game Heroes of Newerth is now free-to-play, with developer reorganizing the Warcraft III Defense of the Ancients inspired game to include three types of accounts, developer S2 Games tells Kotaku.

The new basic account is a free account new players receive when they sign up. Once a player has surpassed a certain threshold of play time, or purchase Goblin Coins, their account is upgraded to a Verified account. Players who were already paid users will have Legacy accounts. Legacy accounts receive a lifetime of free access to all HoN heroes and are able to play in Verified Only games, to ensure that experts and beginners are separated. Legacy accounts can no longer be purchased.

Warcraft III-Inspired Heroes of Newerth Goes Free-To-PlayBasic and verified accounts will have access to a rotating pool of 15 free heroes. Both accounts can also purchase a new heros when they come out.

"With the transition to free-to-play we're opening HoN up to new audiences as our players can now easily introduce the game to their friends," said S2 Games CEO and co-founder Marc DeForest. "S2 has a serious level of commitment to our players to continuously improve both the game and their experience. With the new account types and match-making standards in place, both novice and existing players will benefit from the upgraded structure."

In Heroes of Newerth, and other DOTA games, players are split into two teams that start a match on opposite sides of a map. The map includes a number of paths leading from one side to the other. The object of the game is to take out the opposing team's base with the help of auto-spawned grunts and defend your own base with the help of towers.

The two most popular games in the DOTA genre are Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends. Valve announced last year that they were working on their own version of the game, which they called DOTA 2. Some expect that game may get an outing at Germany's Gamescom next month.

I'm fine with it. Looking at TF2 / LoL, it's hard to deny the business model works. As long as we don't have to pay for heroes.

All previous owners now have legacy accounts, with which you will never have to pay for a hero.

LOL.
GG S2.
No more to say.
Stupid.

Regardless of any points of view or any 'benefits' or anything, HoN had a smaller community than LoL because of the reason it was a P2P game. this made it what it was and i see it more as a reactive instead of a proactive move (obviously) and hence the huge backlash.
had they done this in the first place, there would of been a distinct 'yes' or 'no' , as the case with LoL, but changing and turning really was just going to bring problems after problems.

bring dota2! the quicker the better!

The communities will still be segregated, i don't see what your issues are the only thing that changes is that we don't have to pay for heroes and a few other features. The only people that you will get that you mightn't before are people that want to spend a lot of money to buy all the heroes or time which in both cases does mean they will generally put the effort in since they paid or put a lot of time into it. Dota2 has so much hype about it I'm surprised if it will live up to any ones expectations at the moment.

cool, incoming mass joinage of scrubs.

uninstalling.

So much for the whole "HON will never be a F2P game" from such ******s as maliken and other S2 members.
Just proves their a money grubbing peice of shit company.

not that if effects people that already paid for the game, but they are just trying to get even more money out of this game charging people for heroes now.

Q. How do I become Verified?
You can become verified by reaching level 5 or by purchasing Gold Goblin Coins. This is to ensure you are serious about your account.

not that simple bru

if anything the people who actually paid for this game should automatically have the early access bullshit.

You're already verified as you have 'legacy' status. The early access shit is if you want to play upcoming heroes in dev that arent released yet for whatever reason.

None of the changes have any real impact on the quality of the game besides the ugly outlining around everything you can click.

I've been wanting to try out something new, been bored lately. Maybe now that is has free-to-play, I can at least try it out a bit. I like the idea that they switch around the 15 free characters.

Everyone is a noob when a game comes out. Experienced players should want new players buying the game or there wont be anymore development.
