You're probably all thinking ''not another headset thread'' but I've actually looked nearly everywhere and I can't find a good pair of headphones with what I'm looking for or I can't decide which one.
I want something with good directional sound for the Call of Duty series and Counter Strike series aswell as some good bass for listening to dubstep type of music but also open etc.
Looking for a pair of headphones around $300. Mixed up between the Sennheiser HD598's and Audio-Technica ATH AD900's
Nearly about to buy an Asus Essence STX and I'll probably just buy a Zalman clip-on mic for the headphones
Recommendations?

If you want bass get closed earphones, such as the closed Audio Technica ATH A900.

You didn't search properly, i can guarantee that.

Haven't listened to them, but apparently they are really excellent for eletronic stuff, and still have a fairly decent soundstage. Take this with a grain of salt though as I haven't actually used them before, just going off what I've been told/read.

Cheaper, but very nice comfortable headphone with plenty of bass. Running it through an ST/STX should do a fairly good job of amping it.

What are your thoughts on the Sennheiser HD598's and Audio-Technica ATH AD900's and if I were to buy one of them, what would you think would be best?

If you want bass get closed headphones. Open headphones are physically less capable of creating bass, if you want AD900s get the closed model A900, A lot of sennheiser mid ranged stuff isn't rated that well by enthusiasts.

HD598 / AD900s are not what you're looking for. A900s would be good. Not sure how well your soundcard would run them, but the DT880s might be worth looking at too.

OP: I have owned both the AD900's and the DT440's.

The 440's have more bass but are not as comfortable and generally do not sound as good. Lantern mentioned that they are comfortable (the DT440's), however, Im not sure if he has ever owned them and had to wear them for anything longer than 10 minutes or so. (not to discredit Lantern. He is amongst the select few who have any clur re: headphones on cg).

The headband design for the 440's is quite poor and very uncomfortable. I used to have a wider peice of dense foam cable tied to the headband so that the top of my head would not ache. I might mention, although great sounding, the design is prone to breakages. In the two years I had mine I had to RMA them twice due to the cups snapping off from the main band.

Im very careful with all my headphones (had many pairs) and this particular design headband is the only one I have had problems with. You will also find this design on most Ultrasone headphones.

If you are happy to shop overseas then take a look at this website.

Mainly beyerdynamic phones but good pricing. The 32 ohm DT770 or DT880 might be of interest to you.

I have been using AKG K701's for the past 18 months or so, with probably the hardest leather headband in the world, so wearing the DT440s for about 2 hours didnt bother me too much haha

And OP, remember that if your listening to youtube ripped mp3s, poorly produced stuff or low bitrate music, high end headphones are going to accentuate the flaws.
