TL;DR. Get twitter and support AusCoD.
As some of you have now noticed there has been a sudden jump in the mention and use of twitter by Cybergamer members and entities such as organisations.
In my opinion this is only a good thing, Twitter is a platform that allows people to connect directly and to follow those who interest them. It is essentially a website based chat - but not exactly - to explain simply it is like texting publically to those that you follow, or to certain people you want to.
While it can be simply used for chatting it also serves as a base to announce things directly to those who follow you. Organisations and players use it to advertise news and directly link it so that it will be seen by those who follow straight away in the live feed. Things such as linking your stream just as you go live is popular amongst overseas players who have a following already.
I believe that CG can take advantage of twitter as a useful community tool - it will connect players better and allow those new or perhaps those who just like to watch with a way to follow top players or see when a live stream starts up. Obviously it's small right now, we barely have any streamers or players on twitter but it's something i can see really taking off going into this next year. It gives a new way for people to their content seen other than just posting a thread on CG.
Heading into MW3 it could also turn into a great way to find scrims. We have CG and the scrim forum but it's not as direct and simple as sending a tweet out. The measure of success for this would obviously be in how active CG became on twitter though.
Not only does it serve that purpose but it's also, much like facebook, a great platform for publicity and for people to get their out there. If we want gaming and esports in particular to get bigger then the community, you guys reading, need to get onto it and support it. A community thats connected and up to date with itself is one that is attractive to sponsors.
This comes back to the same issue we have with all our media portals. Not enough people support it, youtube for example, even though the views have gone up not enough people can even bother to press the like button. I hope to see a change in this attitude as we head into MW3. While everything will continue to grow regardless a little effort by the community into things like this will go a huge way.
So basically i am expressing that it would be a big step forward for us if people supported it. You probably doubt it's usefulness, i thought that twitter was pretty stupid myself, but when you only use it to follow what you want it becomes the best way to gain access to information straight away.
So even if you do doubt it, if it suits you try it out. Follow people from this community, if you don't like it you've still helped out just by following people and you might be surprised by it's usefulness. The american and EU CoD communties have already flooded onto it and have been using it for a while. In Australia the ACL team and Halo community also uses it frequently. It's a logical step for us to give it a go to.
For some people to follow you can take a look at this
thread. Many CG members have also started to link their personal twitters in their signature. You will also find that anything else you already follow along with online is probably located on twitter. MLG, youtube personalities, your favourite sports team are probably there.
Thank you for reading and please consider taking advantage of this.
