Legionnaires Interview

As there are a lot of new players coming into the community with such an anticipated game, some people might not know of the Legionnaires name. Can you give us a brief background on how Legionnaires formed, and a brief history of the team?

We were formed in June 2009 in the twilight seasons of competitive BF2142. At the time, the majority of our members (myself included) were a little rowdy in the public servers and forums. Talented, but not exactly well behaved, we felt that we identified with the French Foreign Legion somewhat, and so we became the Legionnaires. Our motto is "Legio Patria Nostra" which means the Legion is my home. Since then we played competitive BC2 for a few seasons on CG and GA, most notable achievements are finishing second in our respective Squad Rush and Conquest grand finals on the CG open ladders last season.

Could you give us a quick run down of the teams roster? (A brief background of each player)

KEY MEMBERS

Krak: Founding member and clan manager, Krak is arguably one of the best infantry players in the game (or at least we think so). A capable infantry squad leader, tactician and shooter in his own right, if theres a gap in the enemy defences, you can be sure that Krak will find it and capitalise on it.

Mischa: Founding member and clan manager, I am most at home in vehicles, air, land or sea. A capable player, I specialise in armour tactics and command and control during matches. Some would say that at 34 I'm a little old to be doing this. Every clan needs a token old person. For this clan, its me.

Shaddy: A BF3 Captain, solid infantry player, strategist and commander, Shaddy came to us from Team Renegade during our BC2 campaign. He has established himself as a very capable clan officer in our external affairs, and we welcome his cool headed approach, to balance my (Mischa's) 'flying off the handle' approach. Was instrumental in establishing the teams early capability in BF3. He's also DJ. Hit him up for some tunes. They're good.

Jester: A BF3 Captain, solid all rounder and squad leader, Jester has only recently started proper match play, but will look to add valuable leadership and skill on the battlefield once he gets into it.

Torque: The baby of the team, young Torque had the hardest trial of any member we have ever had. The source of much publicity for all the wrong reasons (usually), Torque is quite comfortable in the spotlight and loves the attention from shoutcasters and the like. Don't ever let him speak cause you'll never shut him up. Very capable player and one to watch.

Spazy: Spazy talked himself up about being pro at BF3 before it even started and tbh we were all quite sick of it by the time the game had come out. However, he has developed into a very talented Jet and armour pilot and we are pleased to see that he wasn't just full of shit J Often found swearing on TS when he is tangling with Oxide in a jet, we will rely on him to keep the skies clear for us in matches.

Cardio: The quiet achiever, Cardio was one our biggest infantry enforcers for BC2. He doesn't say much, he just lets his gaming do the talking. Our Squad Rush content expert, we expect Cardio to head up the Squad Rush team once it starts. Until then, he's quite happy with conquest.

Paradox: One of our pro shooters from the 2142 days, he hated BC2 and never played it for us.....and ended up discovering alcohol, girls and goodness knows what else. After several whirlwind relationships and out-of-body experiences he is back behind his PC and gaming hard. Performing as well as expected, we are happy to have him in our core lineup.

STABLEHORSES
Rabbit , Liam (Unr[e]al from db), Jonah(virus), Bunnyx, Yarnu, GodModule, TheCleaningGlove, Laozer, azukay, citesh, Aztec, Sify, and Frisco.

I think most teams and the general community when looking at the line-up of teams, they would consider you guys to be the underdogs. How will this underdog status influence your team both in game and out?

Outside the gaming arena, I guess it's not really an issue, we cop our fair share of trash talk as do other teams. The underdog status is understandable based on our achievements thus far, which aren't that many. We don't mind. We're happy that iM considered us at least good enough to be a part of the comp, and look upon it as a good opportunity to benchmark ourselves against the other top teams.

As this is the 1st Major tournament ever for Battlefield 3, do you believe it will be important for your team to prepare as much as possible and showcase some good skills to establish yourself as a top team going into the new year?

Good preparation will be important more than ever here, as we are going up against the best teams straight away. It is different from working your way up an 80 team ladder, where you can iron out the kinks as you go. We need to be switched on with individual skills, tactics and teamwork from the start if we are to do well.

What would you say are the key Battlefield strengths of Legionnaires?

Evenly spread skill sets, teamwork, internal cohesion and a desire to do well would have to be our key strengths.

If you had to name one of your players as an MVP who would it be?

Young Torque is shining at the moment, closely followed by InfinityX (Paradox). The other guys do a lot of important jobs in matches but it isn't always reflected on the scoreboard.

Now that there is a proper scheduled tournament happening, do you believe you will change the way a normal week goes for your team. Will you guys scrim more, prepare specifically for each match, how will you and your team prepare for this tournament?

We don't have a lot of detailed scrim experience on each map to build on, but typically preparation will involve some strategy development with key players in a match server, to develop rollouts and map tactics. We 'flesh out' these tactics by confirming them in friendly scrims and make adjustments where necessary. By match time we should have a team pracced up on the agreed rollout and strat, with several contingencies and set piece plays built in to allow for anything that might happen. The operational tempo of the matches is quite fast against these top teams, and our squads must react lightning fast to the changing situation if we are to do well.

With the map pool released, are you and your team confident with the selection of the maps for this tournament?

I think so, yes. We are lacking in some areas with these maps, but we will look to develop some solid strats for each of them. Being able to counter the unbalanced nature of some of the maps will be key here.

What do you think are the most important things for your team to do to solidify yourself victories throughout the tournament?

Refining individual skill sets is a must, as it is a new game; we also need to be sure our technical understanding of the game is the best it can be. After that comes putting it together as a squad and then as a team. Map knowledge will be key here, players must know the map like the back of their hand to achieve good flag control at all times.

Who do you think will be your biggest opponent in this competition? Are there any rivalries between yourself and other teams?

As one of the newer teams to this sort of thing, we are weary of everybody else in the comp. We have already seen what Immunity and Mindfreak are capable of; and if you can find a way to consistently beat these two teams then you've got the comp in the bag. We have yet to put our core match team against the others, so it is hard to say if they will be performing at that level or not.

As for rivalries, there really aren't any at this stage. We have had several clashes of a personal nature with quite a few members of other clans in this comp in the past but at the moment everybody is being quite gentlemanly in their conduct, which is good to see. I intend to ensure that it is reciprocated by all of my members at all times, and I trust other clans will do same. The keyboard warrior days are over tbh.

What are your predictions for this tournament, do you expect there to be any upsets?

iM vs MF in the Grand Final at this stage. Either team could win. I will also consider that either of these teams could be knocked out in the semi's by one of the others. You never think it will happen, but it does happen.

How do you guys think you will go in this tournament, what do you expect from you and your team?

Based on the scrims we have had prior to this league we shouldn't do too badly. We aim to win every match that we play otherwise there is no point in even lining up in the server against the other team. At this point in time, realistically we believe we can finish in the top half if we put the effort in.

Do you think Battlefield 3 has any real future ahead of it in terms of competitive gaming?

As long as the competitions keep running and the community has interest, then it should go a long way. Shoutcasting and battlerecorder are two things that will bring the BF community alive again with this game. If these things come in, longevity would be assured.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks for the interview, best of luck to all teams.
