Well herp derp. Of course it does not show true aptitude. However, there is an undeniably correlation between high enter scores and intelligence. You will not find a 99.95 straight 50s guys (one of my mates got it this year) with a low iq but just hard work.
Those that get those high 90 scores are freaks, won't disagree with that. But those that get a 50 enter, I'm sure a good % of them could get up to an 80 enter if they put in the time required which a lot lack the motivation for. Personally, I've got no interest in attending a uni (however that may change in a few years, I don't know) and I guess part of the reason for that being I don't have a career I'm certain I want to follow and I don't want to fork out a shitload of money and waste my time doing something like an arts degree.
There are multiple ways to go about a career whilst avoiding going to a university and be just as successful if not more successful than a university student.

If ur spastic enough to get a 60 and say you don't care, then inmost cases, you are NOT a smart individual as you neglect the fact that education is important. I actually don't see how people can rationalize that atar does not matter.
At the same time, what's the point of crying about a result you can't change? I'd rather be happy and move on with whatever enter I got then shedding a tear over something I can't change.
Again, not everyone needs a 80+ enter to get into the course they wish to continue their education in which you seem to be simply overlooking. A 60 enter might do that for them and they have every right to be proud of their achievement no matter what it is. For those choosing to continue their education in something such as tafe, most of the time all you need is a year 12 pass which would then be the goal they would have set themselves.
Also, atar is only relevant for something like 18 months, if you took a gap year or two then applied to go to a university they don't even look at your atar score.
And finally, take a look at a couple of generations before ours (gen y), I'm sure a good chunk of our parents didn't even attend year 12, let alone get an atar yet they have all managed to survive in the system and get jobs in which many people couldn't get into no matter what their atar is.

Not everyone may aspire to go to melbourne uni, that is true. It may be irrelevant to their atar or their capabilities. Some people go to monash to do a double degree, or med which is not offered as an undergrad degree at melb. However prestige does matter, that is why people hardly go to say Norte dame to do med as a first preference against melbourneuni guaranteed med entry or monash or even the other major state units.
I will agree that going to Melbourne uni v another uni does help you get into a job a little easier but even if you don't go to Melbourne/whatever the other big ones are for the other states, it doesn't mean it's going to stop you from getting into the field you like either.
