open up folder options and maybe start by restoring defaults you may have selected something you didnt need to although I havent come accross a setting that could do that,
Secondly maybe have a look in c:/users/youruser/desktop see if any of your icons are in there.
Ive never heard of that happening before
If all else fails
create a new profile
1. Right click my computer click manage.
2. Choose local users and groups *
3. go into users, right click add new user.
4. You can figure the next bit out.
5. Add him to the administrators group. by double clicking the new user member of tab and adding administrator to the list.
6. Log out and log in as your new user.
Deleting old profile

right click my computer properties, Click advanced system settings, Click settings under user profiles.
When you can see your old profile select it and delete it. From now on use your new profile.
If that fails reinstall your OS.
