A mate told me if you take all the bass off on a g35 In control panel you can hear footsteps much better in cod, I haven't tried it though.

Good headphones will let you hear foot steps (or any other sound you listen for) much easier.

It's actually true though - good headphones with a sound card will handle quiet sounds and direction much better than a usb gaming headset.
