gayle you could make a case for a one day side but an average of 40 in test cricket isnt something that gets you put up there with the greats.
Lee, never got more then 5 wickets in an innings and never got 10 wickets or more in a match. Ntini, Gough, Pollock, Kallis. Just of the top of my head are much better then he was in their primes. Throw in Caddick, Harmison, Aktar 2000-03, Pathan aswell for that matter. Lee was a good bowler but there are much better even in recent years.
And he nothing but a spec of dirt compared to the West Indies pace attack of the 80's with the likes of Garner, Walsh, Ambrose, Holding and Marshell. (Only bringing up these guys as you actually brought up the Indies of the 80s in your post)
