A good mate of mine is looking to get a new set of cans.

We both understand that decent headphones require proper amplification.
How ever, after using the Audio Technica: ATH-AD700's for a while, it's time for an upgrade.
Also, he already has an ASUS Xonar DX sound card.

  • $400 price budget.
  • Link's to the seller and or website.

They will be used for a bit of everything (music, films and gaming)

from what i heard, these are the best headphones for under $200 (even though your budget is $400)
i know you can get them cheaper, but it's just to show you the headphones mainly.

these require a good amount of amplification to be worth while. The only real option, which doesn't require an amp are the AD900's.

Otherwise look at getting a Matrix M-Stage and some AKG Q701's or some Beyer DT880's.

Unless you want closed phones?

You'd oughta be silly to do something like that.

k701s lack bass and are generally a bit scary to a lot of people.

I have had a pair for over 2 years, but I cannot recommend them if you listen predominantly to electronic music

the Beyer DT250's are a good option and can work well with no amp.

Another option is to buy overseas.. up to you.. and get a pair of the 32ohm DT880's. They work better with no amp but still work best with an amp.

as samo said, the DT250s would suit well especially if your travelling on the bus/train etc with them.
Open headphones would make everyone in the bus a tad mad
