Now before you start reading, this is a long story so if you cbf reading just leave now. "tl;dr" Wasn't funny when it started and it's not funny now.

Ok, so some of you may remember a thread I posted a couple of weeks ago asking for dog breed advice. As I mentioned, the place I'm moving in to was advertised as "pet friendly". Now, when you see that on a property listing you would think "oh yeah, no problem with pets at all", time to think again.

Basically what's happened is; gf and myself applied for this place, got a call next day saying our application is approved, I mentioned to the property manager that we'll take it and also that we intend to get a puppy at some stage, bitch was all like "ok well I'll find out from the owner and body corporate what types of breeds are/aren't allowed". 3 days and 3 phone calls later, bitch still didn't have an answer for me but assured me she would find out. Bitch conveniently went on annual leave for 2 weeks the next day...

I have since then signed the lease and given a check for the first month of rent but we're meant to go in on wednesday to pay the bond and pick up the keys. I have also been emailing back and forth with one of the other property managers who is looking after this particular property whilst other bitch is on leave. The person who I have been speaking to is without a doubt the worlds least intelligent human. Her first email to me was;

"Dear Matthew, What breed of animal do you have?"...

Now after over a week of emailing back and forth with this brain dead joke of a person, she sends me an email this morning saying;

"Dear Matthew,

I'm afraid he has not approved for your request of a dog residing at the property, I have verified that you would train the dog. He is disappointed that you did not advise him of your plans 2 weeks ago

Regards,"

I don't even....

After receiving that, I decided to call the office and speak to someone higher up. I was given the contact number for the office director "Nick". Nick is a dickhead. This guy was angry from the second I started speaking. I wasn't rude, I wasn't angry and I wasn't looking for a fight. I just wanted to state the facts to this guy and get some help to work out the situation. This guy started losing his shit, talking over me, accusing me of animal cruelty and his logic behind it all was "because I said i don't have a dog on my application form, I was approved for the place on the basis that I don't have pets and by getting a pet I was trying to change the agreement". This guy's clearly just as intelligent as the rest of his crew.

So CG, I look to you for help. What should I do next? If I wanted to, should I be able to cancel my application?

Looking for educated responses, not just "yeah man that's ****ed" etc..

Also, I know this probably should be in off topic discussion or some shit but I'd really appreciate advice from PC guys as well.

Cheers

Complain to the media; they'll blow it all way out of proportion, people will lose heaps of face, and you may possibly win - (not likely.)

By signing that contract of lease, you didn't give up your right to ever own a pet lol. So i find it funny that this Nick guy is saying you're trying to change the agreement.
Sounds like a total bunch of ******s. I reckon get in contact with the owner somehow and talk to him and see what he has to say to you about it.

ahahahah omg, made me lol so much

anyway. tell the media, like said before.

Or threaten them with legal action, because they didnt reply to you before the sale.rent of the property. I'm sure there's a law against that somewhere

Bring copies of your emails and confront in person, highlight anything that proves you were asking about the pet availability prior to 2 weeks ago. Then if they still dont agree forget the house and move on, you havent signed the lease or put a payment down so legally you're not bound into any contractual agreement.

I've requested an email or phone number for the owner several times but they refuse to give it to me. I'm convinced they haven't even asked them.

Like I said, already signed the lease and given a check for first months rent. Just haven't paid the bond or picked up keys yet.

Well then they are most likely going to say you are under contract and you are kind of in the wrong as you have signed the contract. I'll email my Uni lecturer and see what he reckons, he's on holidays so no promises.

A diplomatic meeting with the Nick bloke might work, you could also request to speak to the owners. Just make sure you claim ignorance when they say that you were aware you couldn't have a dog (which you were but still). I'm not really too sure with housing contracts, can you quit the lease/bond whenever you want? Or is there like a minimum time before you can drop out?

It's a 12 month lease but I just don't know if it's too late to back out since I haven't paid the bond or moved in yet.

Was the original correspondence with the woman by phone or email? Because if it was email it would be pretty solid evidence that you informed them from the very start. Or any physical evidence of you letting them know more than two weeks ago should be enough.
