Ok, so basically i just installed windows 7 into my brand new computer and now looking to hook it up to the internet, I only have one modem that is used for the family computer out in the dining room. ok so i have an ethernet cable running from my new pc to the modem.
Is this right? and do i have to do any configuration stuff to my new and or family pc?
if so please let me knowhow to do all of it.

And also the reason im posting this in the xbox section is because the PC community all seem like immature little assholes TBH...
thanks guys.

You need to work out if your modem is also a router, sometimes a modem only have 1 port, sometimes there is 4-5 ports. Then you need to work out if your modem is wireless. This way you can leave the home computer as is, and setup a network connection so your bedroom pornhub PC can be online via a USB stick or a PCI card into the PC.

If the home PC is working and all your doing is changing the cord from the PC to your PC you wont have to change any details, because the home PC should've set up the modem to connect.

Yes PC can be ******s, but dont hate on us

You only find this because you have your default platform set to PC, as soon as they see 'xbox' they turn into 5 year olds

I mean if Pac-Man effected us kids, we'd all be running around darkened rooms munching magic pills, listening to repetitive electronic music

There are most likely to be 2 options:

1. There is your firewall that will prevent access to the internet, so you should look at its settings - depending of which software you use.

2. The modem is how old? since it was connected to the family PC first, you have admin rights there, go through the family computer's setting and config until it works

Extra 3- theres a problem with your cable, unless it says connected to network but not internet.
