So I just found this while browsing ESR, thought it was kind of an interesting share that maybe some one could try if they run a Linux box:

This manual will explain to you how to run your own dedicated quakelive server on a linux box.

Requirements:

* An updated 32bit linux installation of quakelive to copy files from (www.quakelive.com)
* qll (binary, source)

Steps:

- Make a directory for the server - Copy quakelive client files:

Quote from Someone:
quakelive.i386.so (found in ~/.quakelive/quakelive/home/baseq3/)
baseq3 directory (found in ~/.quakelive/quakelive/baseq3/)

- Copy qll binary to server directory (don't forget to chmod +x qll), server directory should look like this:

Quote from Someone:
./quakelive.i386.so ./qll
./baseq3/pak10.pk3
./baseq3/qzdm9.pk3
./baseq3/qzdm16.pk3
./baseq3/qzctf6.pk3
./baseq3/qzdm18.pk3
./baseq3/qzdm3.pk3
./baseq3/pak17.pk3
./baseq3/qztourney8.pk3

- Run qll as you would run q3ded or etded, for example:

Quote from Someone:
./qll +set dedicated 2 +set fs_homepath /home/user/.quakelive +set fs_basepath /home/user/quakelive +set net_port 12345 +set rconpassword kurwa +set g_gametype 5 +map qzctf3

What isn't supported:

* Punkbuster
* 64bit
* Server doesn't show up in quakelive.com server browser.

is this actually legal to do, or will iD be knocking on your door?

At the moment there's been no word on weather or not it's legal; however the general consensus is that if id dont want us to do it they'll just patch it out.

not sure if its legal tree, should have probably asked noetix before posting this! as far as i know, internode are trying to get servers up, but we are pretty much begging ID to let internode to do this. So I would expect it be the same for anybody else!

There is nothing illegal about parsing arguments to a program that you're allowed to run, regardless of whether ID intended you to parse those arguments or not and regardless of the consequences.

There are too many reasons to even begin listing why the notion that this could be illegal is absurd... suffice it to say you're not modifying the game in any way, just using the program. "That's not how ID wants us to use it" isn't a valid argument because sorry ID, that's how computers work.

not to put a shroud on your cloud, the day people started doing this Sync Error (ID Developer) released this statement on IRC

17:12:02 < SyncError > We're banning the people that are running [servers]
17:12:10 < SyncError > and were deciding what to do about the players that join them.

1) Two lines on IRC is not an official statement.
2) The game developer banning people for doing it on a free game doesn't make it illegal.

Bad luck mate.

true haha sorry when I said 'not-legal' I meant it in the terms of an Exploiting or Glitching way - Defined here: "Glitching the practice of finding and exploiting flaws or glitches in video games to achieve something that was not intended by the game designers. Gamers who engage in this practice are known as glitchers. Glitches can help the player" - Wikipedia .

(Not that I said it was 'an official statement')
Official or non-Official the only person from Australia who successfully 'glitched/exploited' this server bug had his account and all his other IP-related accounts banned :V

bad case of selective reading

No worries. enLighteN's post sounded like he was concerned with real-world consequences as opposed to just being banned.

Either way, CG users getting the full story is a positive
