Wii softmodding/USB loader help

Hey,
So I softmodded my wii and everything seemed to work fine. I've got the homebrew and alpha-something channels on my wii (forgot the name of the other, i think it's alpha something - you can run copied dvds / game isos from it). I installed configurable usb loader also, so i can make back-ups of my games onto a portable i have.
To prepare my hdd for usb loader I used WBFS Manager 3.0 and formatted it.
I put my portable in my wii's usb port and run the usb loader through the homebrew channel. It opens up and tried to detect the wii. When it tried to detect the hdd it always times out, and the light on my hdd, which is usually yellow when plugged in turns red.
I'm guessing my hdd isn't compatible with the wii/ program so I might have to get another one.
Is this right?
Any help appreciated
