Most of these problems are driver related it is not all that hard to figure out.

Download the new directx 9 or 10 for vista if that does not work uninstall the directx drivers reinstall.

You might need to manually uninstall the drivers in safe mode if you still have troubles.

Good idea to update windows while ya at it

^ had the same error, just downloaded this infamous, which is the latest version of directx - you should be a-ok to play after that.
